Red2Blue for Endurance

From Red Head to Blue Head — On the Trail, Up the Mountain, Days from Shore

Red2Blue gives endurance athletes, mountaineers, expedition teams and adventure racers a mindset framework built for the moments when quitting is only ever one bad hour away — whether that's on an ultra course, a desert stage, an ocean crossing or an exposed ridge.

Andy Long

Endurance, Extreme & Multi-sport Leader

Andy Long has raced some of the toughest multi-day events in endurance sport, including the Marathon des Sables, and leads Red2Blue's work in endurance, extreme and multi-sport.

Under pressure, Andy uses a simple approach: checkpoint to checkpoint, not the whole distance left. It's this kind of practical, race-tested thinking — not theory — that shapes how Red2Blue is built for endurance athletes and teams.

Endurance and extreme sport put a different kind of pressure on the mind than a ninety-minute match or a single round. It isn't one big moment — it's hundreds of small ones, stretched across hours, days or weeks: a stretch of open ocean with no visible progress, a 3am low on an ultra course, a summit push where every decision matters, radio silence from a support crew on a desert stage, a teammate falling apart on hour thirty of a relay.

Red2Blue gives athletes and teams a way to recognise the “Red Head” moment — the spiral, the catastrophising, the urge to stop — and a trained way back to a calm, focused “Blue Head,” checkpoint to checkpoint, stroke by stroke, mile by mile.

Some of the best reframes in endurance sport already point the same way. Elite ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter talks about reaching the “pain cave” not as something to dread, but as a sign you're finally racing — arriving there means you've made it, now you're in it. Red2Blue trains that exact shift as a skill: from dread to signal, so the hardest part of the event becomes the part you're ready for.

How does Red2Blue help?

Whether you're solo across an ocean, on a rope above 7,000 metres, or part of a four-person expedition team, the mental skill is the same: notice pressure early, name it, and choose your response rather than being run by it. Red2Blue trains that as a skill — not a personality trait — so it holds up when you're exhausted, sleep-deprived, cold, in pain, or a long way from anyone who can talk you through it.

For individual athletes

Learn to spot the moment a “Red Head” creeps in — the 3am low, the spiral after a bad section, the fear that creeps in on an exposed ridge, the thought that you can't finish — and use practical mindset tools built for solo, sustained pressure, not a single high-stakes moment. Red2Blue helps endurance athletes and mountaineers stay in control of pace, decision-making and recovery when there's no coach in your ear and no teammate to lean on.

For teams

Give every member of your expedition, relay or adventure racing team a shared mental language — so when one person hits a wall at 2am, the rest of the team knows how to help them reset rather than watching morale spiral. Red2Blue builds a common framework for pressure, pacing and recovery that the whole team, athletes and support crew alike, can use together.

For events, sponsors
& federations

Build mental performance into your programme at scale, not as a one-to-one luxury reserved for your best-funded athletes. Red2Blue offers a consistent, trainable framework that can be delivered to a whole squad or a whole field, giving every athlete access to the same mental skills your top performers already rely on.
Where Red2Blue comes from

Red2Blue wasn't built in a classroom, and it wasn't built for one sport.

It comes out of more than twenty-five years of work in elite sport, business and high-stakes environments.
  • Developed by practitioners who've worked behind the scenes with Olympic and professional athletes, elite coaches and high-performing teams.
  • Built on real clinical and behavioural science rather than generic sports psychology.

Built to work alongside
the team you already have

Red2Blue isn't designed to replace the coaches, medics or psychologists already around your programme — it's designed to give everyone a shared language to use together.

At Worcestershire County Cricket Club, the team's own psychologist adopted Red2Blue themselves, not to replace what they already did, but because it gave them a common way to talk about pressure with coaches and players alike.

That's the pattern we see again and again. Red2Blue doesn't compete with the expertise already in the room — it gives it a shared vocabulary, one that works just as well four hundred miles offshore or three days into a desert stage as it does in a debrief room.

R2B Endurance spotlight

Here are just a few of the athletes using Red2Blue in endurance and extreme sport.

Louis Alexander

Adventurer

"With any extreme challenge, I face an abundance of uncontrollable obstacles. What I always have control of is my attention, and how I use my Red2Blue skillset to keep control of that attention when confronting those obstacles. That’s what helps me to remain on task and focused.”

Adriana Brownlee

Mountaineer

“Becoming a Red2Blue coach has opened so many doors for me. It's shed light on how I function on the mountains and how I can teach other people those same amazing skills.”
