Shaw Education Trust

A whole-trust approach to Red2Blue

Background
Shaw Education Trust (SET) is a growing Multi-Academy Trust supporting children of all ages and abilities. Its mission is to deliver positive life chances, helping students overcome barriers and thrive. When one senior leader became a Certified Red2Blue Coach and introduced the concept to the central team, the potential was instantly clear. “We knew this was something we wanted to share across the Trust,” says Julie Yarwood, Chief Learning and Quality Officer. A Trust-wide INSET day followed, alongside training of in-house coaches to embed Red2Blue in every school.
"It gives you simple language as a starting point that everyone can draw on. It removes the second-guessing and gives clarity"
What We Did
SET’s schools span primary, secondary and specialist settings—so a one-size-fits-all approach wouldn’t work. Red2Blue’s adaptability allowed us to develop an entirely bespoke programme with age-appropriate resources aimed at both primary and secondary schools. In specialist settings, materials were adapted to meet the learner’s unique needs. The common thread was a pupil-centred, people-first approach.
The Results
After a year, the impact is already visible. In one primary school, student Red2Blue ambassadors are helping their peers to understand and manage their mindset. Julie Yarwood told us. “Children are becoming more aware of their own feelings. Whether they are in a ‘Red head’ or a ‘Blue head’ moment, they can recognise it—and manage it. The simple, accessible strategies that Red2Blue offers are providing vital to student wellbeing.
In secondary schools, the data is promising toom, with early signs of improved behaviour and focus. And it’s not just the students who are benefiting. SET is investing in staff wellbeing through Red2Blue, enabling teachers to cope better with the pressures of school life.
The reason Julie Yarwood thinks Red2Blue works? “It gives you simple language as a starting point that everyone can draw on. It removes the second-guessing and gives clarity in the moment.” Julie says that when young people can self-regulate better, it increases their engagement and their ability to stay in class and to learn well. “The important thing is knowing that issues will arise—but also knowing what to do when things don’t go to plan.”
