Warwick School

Mental skills for aspiring athletes

Background
Warwick School has a strong and proud tradition of producing homegrown sportsmen, who have gone on to perform at the very highest levels of competition or have enjoyed a professional career in their chosen sport. Their Performance Support Pathway provides a valuable resource for young aspiring athletes, ensuring excellent coaching, strength & conditioning, nutritional advice, sports psychology and lifestyle advice/mentoring. As part of this programme, we were brought in to help the boys understand the concept of how mindset shapes performance.
"Red2Blue is without a doubt a unique approach to performance and personal development for our young people"
What We Did
Drawing from our experience working with elite athletes, top-level coaches and high-powered business leaders, we developed a Red2Blue programme for the Year 12 and 13 students on the school’s Performance Support Pathway to develop the mindset skills needed to help them to perform at their best when it matters most.

The students took part in a series of interactive seminars delivered introducing them to the Red2Blue model. Through the programme, the students learnt practical mental skills and strategies to manage high-stakes situations and stay focused in high-performance sporting environments. They explored structure, mindset and control – all through the simple, accessible visual Red2Blue framework – giving them the tools and techniques to gain control over their thinking, reactions and performance, when the pressure is on.
The Results
The sessions gave them tangible strategies they could implement on the pitch, in the gym, or wherever their performance was being tested. From breathing and focus to reframing pressure moments, Red2Blue equipped them with a toolkit to stay cool and perform when it counts. Even after the first session, the impact was clear. The students were not only engaged—they were applying what they’d learned almost immediately. According to Mr Hesketh, The Head of Athlete Performance, Games and Geography Teacher, “Many of the boys commented that they were already able to use the tools to help maintain their calmness, clarity, and control of attention in competitive sporting battles.”

As the Performance Support Pathway continues, these young athletes now have a stronger mental foundation to build upon, whether they go on to compete at higher levels or simply want to become more composed, focused individuals.
